Official: Premier League announce June 17 as provisional restart date
A return date for the English top-flight has emerged on Thursday the 28th of May, after being agreed upon during a meeting of Premier League Shareholders.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of European football, including all of the top-five leagues, were suspended during March.
However, the majority of those leagues, with Ligue 1 the obvious exception, are now either back in action or gearing up for a return.
The Bundesliga has already managed a fairly safe return earlier this month, with two game weeks played out successfully in May.
La Liga looks to be the next top league to follow in Germanys footsteps, with the week beginning June 8th looking likely to be when we see Spanish football back on our screens.
Italy’s minister for sport Vincenzo Spadafora also recently stated that the Serie A season could resume on June 13 or 20.
And as mentioned above, the latest top-flight league to agree on a potential restart date is the Premier League.
The English top-flight, along with the EFL, has been suspended since March 13th.
However, the Premier League have, on Thursday evening, released an official statement outlining their plans for a restart.
After a meeting of Premier League Shareholders, a new provisional restart date for the PL has been agreed upon. That date being the 17th of June with two ties that day: Aston Villa vs Sheffield United and Manchester City vs Arsenal, provided that all safety requirements are in place.
Said sides have played one less game than the rest of the league, so getting their games in hand out of the way first does make sense, with a full match round beginning on Friday the 19th of June.
As well as the restart date, the PL statement also confirmed that all matches will be behind closed doors and will all be broadcast live in the UK by the Leagues existing broadcast partners, which are Sky Sports, BT Sport, BBC Sport and Amazon Prime.
The statement concluded by outlining the scheduled kick-off times for matches taking place on each day. All times shown below are on BST:
Saturday 12:30, 15:00, 17:30 and 20:00
Sunday 12:00, 14:00, 16:30 and 19:00
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 18:00 and 20:00
