Woman fined £100 for ‘parking millimetres over edge of bay’

Woman fined £100 for ‘parking millimetres over edge of bay’

metro - 9 months ago
As anyone who did their shopping on Christmas Eve knows, getting parked can be a nightmare. But retired chief inspector, Paul Rider, 65, has been left furious after his daughter was hit with a ?100 fine for a seemingly innocuous reason. She had parked at the Parkway Shopping Centre in Coulby Newham on December 24 to get some last minute shopping. A retired police officer can’t figure out why his daughter was fined £100 for parking in this space.

Former chief inspector, Paul Rider, 65, said she had left her car at the Parkway Shopping Centre in Coulby Newham on December 24 to get some last minute shopping.

But a parking charge issued by an attendant from Northern Parking Services (NPS) claims her Range Rover was ‘not parked wholly within a marked bay’.

Accompanying photos show that if the large car is parked outside the space, it appears to be by mere millimetres.

But determined former police officer of 30 years, Mr Rider, from Marton, has challenged the fine, and has even had his tape measure out to highlight what he believes to be flawed logic.

In a letter to the Parkway Centre manager, Mr Rider said he was ‘perturbed at the unscrupulous working practices being undertaken by NPS’.

An appeal letter sent to NPS adds: ‘My challenge is on the basis that the breach of your companys parking terms did not take place.

‘Your signs stipulate that vehicles must be parked within a single marked parking space and must not cause an obstruction.

‘However, the bay in which my vehicle was parked was not clearly marked and therefore there was no contravention of your contractual agreement.

‘Please refer to the photographs taken by your employee which clearly show that the bay was not marked at one side.’

Mr Rider says the management at the shopping centre have since written to him apologising and saying the fine will be cancelled, adding: ‘I have rebriefed the parking company regarding using a common sense approach
whilst issuing tickets’.

Grandad-of-two and father-of-two, Mr Rider says he went and measured many of the parking bays around the car park, with most ranging between 2.4m and 2.6m.

But he claims the bay where the Range Rover was parked is only 2.34m wide, with the neighbouring car parked very close to the dividing line – making it difficult for passengers to get out.

He said that on the day in question the car had two boys inside, aged five and 18 months, who needed to get out of the back seats.

He also questioned how the vehicle could be judged to have not parked in a marked bay considering there is no dividing line painted on the right side of the space.

He even claims a disabled lady was fined for the same contravention, despite displaying her badge and parking there when no allocated spaces were available.

The car park has previously provoked controversy after it was revealed in 2016 that anyone using the parent and child spaces not accompanied by a youngster under four would be receiving a £100 fine.

NPS were contacted for comment.
