Coming Home to Greece with Diane Kochilas

For an expat like me, homecomings and farewells are part of the bargain of loving two countries: Greece and the United States. New York, Athens, and the Blue Zone Greek island of Ikaria triangulate my existence, and until this past March with COVID-19, I moved fluidly between them. My back-and-forth sojourns have been so frequent … Continued The post Coming Home to Greece with Diane Kochilas appeared first on We Said Go Travel.

The 5 Best Tours And Excursions In Marrakech

The 5 Best Tours And Excursions In Marrakech

pommie travels - 4 months ago

Marrakech, the red city with a spectacular Medina, ideal to get lost in its narrow streets and souks. The historical part is walled and full of mosques, madrasas, palaces, riads, and gardens, although everything revolves around its incredible Jamaa el Fna Square. You can take a look at desert tours in Marrakech for all the excursions you can do there.

If you have an extra day, from Marrakech you have incredible places to know, such as the Ouzoud Waterfalls, the beautiful Essaouira or the spectacular Kasbahs of Ouarzazate. And if you have one more day, you can make an excursion to the Sahara Desert, a visit that we are sure, you will not forget.

All these wonders you can visit for free, if they are close a good option is to do it by bus and if they are further away it is advisable to rent a car. A comfortable and safe alternative is to book a tour or excursion with a guide to learn more about the history that surrounds Marrakech and Morocco. We leave you a list of what we believe are the 5 best tours and excursions in Marrakech.

1. Desert excursion (Merzouga or Zagora)

One of the best excursions in Marrakech desert trips is to travel in 4 × 4 or camel the desert and spend the night in one of its jaimas enjoying an incredibly starry night. To get in touch with the great Sahara Desert, the world’s largest warm desert, you have two options: Merzouga or Zagora. Zagora is closer to Marrakech but the part of the desert you will visit from Merzouga is much more spectacular with its large dunes. To reach the desert you will make a part of the Kasbahs route, in which we recommend that you do not miss the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, one of the jewels of Morocco.

Merzouga is about 9 hours by rental car from Marrakech and Zagora about 7 hours, once there you can hire a 4 × 4 excursion through the desert. Another more comfortable and safe option is to hire some of the best excursions from Marrakech with a guide, which will pick you up directly at your hotel or riad and take you by bus to the desert, once there you will have the 4 × 4 prepared To make the route through the desert.

2. Excursion to Essaouira, one of the best excursions in Marrakech

Essaouira is the jewel of the Moroccan Atlantic and one of the places we met on our trip to Marrakech. This city of white buildings and bathed by the Atlantic Ocean is perfect to relax in Marrakech. Its medina was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and enjoys the beautiful architecture and that with the typical shops of Morocco make a whole with a lot of charming. Its cuisine based on fresh fish is delicious.

3. Guided tour of Marrakech

There are many things to see and do in Marrakech desert tours, especially in the interior of the Medina. This old part of the city is surrounded by a large 10-meter high clay and adobe wall with 10 entrance doors, among which the Bab Agnaou Gate stands out. Inside the Medina, you can make a route starting at the famous Jamaa el Fna Square, next to the Koutoubia Mosque, a square that changes its appearance as night approaches.

The best thing about the city is to get lost in the souks and find some of the places to visit in Marrakech essential, such as the impressive Medersa Ben Youssef or the Saadian Tombs. You can also visit other areas that preserve the ancient charm of the city, such as the Jewish quarter or the Mellah. And if you are a bit overwhelmed in the city, don’t forget to relax in the beautiful Majorelle Gardens or on the terrace of a riad having a mint tea.

The best option to stay in the Medina is a Riad, old mansions with an inner courtyard that you will feel like in a story of ” The thousand and one nights.”

And if you want to start your trip in the best way, you cannot miss Marrakech with a guided tour.

4. Excursion to Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate also is known as the door of the desert, is a city that highlights the visit to the Kasbah of Taourirt and one of the essential places to visit in Morocco. Near the city is the Atlas film studio, the Hollywood of the desert, where you can enter to see the sets of films that were shot there such as Lawrence of Arabia, Alexander the Great, The Mummy, Star Wars, The Jewel of the Nile, Gladiator of The Kingdom of Heaven.

Although the star visit of the excursion is the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a spectacular adobe and clay town, considered one of the most beautiful places in Morocco. The Kasbah, still inhabited, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and has been the perfect setting for films like Gladiator or Lawrence of Arabia. Walking its narrow streets is like going back in time, being able to reach the top of the town with stunning views of the arid landscape that surrounds it.

It can be reached by rental car from Marrakech, by taxi or by bus, arriving at Ait Ben Haddou in about 4 hours, crossing the port of Tizi-N-Tichka.

Another more comfortable option is to hire a guided tour with which you will be picked up directly at the hotel and with which you can only dedicate yourself to enjoying the best excursions in Marrakech.

5. Excursion to the Ouzoud Waterfalls

The Ouzoud Waterfalls located 150 kilometers from Marrakech are the most spectacular in North Africa and one of the best excursions from Marrakech. They have a waterfall of about 110 meters high and are born from the Ouzoud River, where you can also bathe at the base of the waterfall and enjoy a privileged environment, surrounded by green valleys.

To arrive from Marrakech you can do it by car, taxi or with a guided tour that will pick you up at the hotel and in less than 3 hours you will already be enjoying this incredible wonder of nature.
