Barcelona stars reject wage cut proposal, club expected to implement reductions anyway
Spain is being ravaged by the coronavirus epidemic.
On Thursday morning, Spain had recorded almost 50,000 positive Covid-19 cases according to data from John’s Hopkins University. That’s the fourth-highest in the world, behind China, Italy and America.
Moreover, Spain has the second-highest death count: 3,647 fatalities.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Barcelona squad had agreed in principle to wage cuts during the coronavirus outbreak, however those salary reductions had yet to be finalised.
On Thursday, Spanish paper AS report that Barcelona’s stars have rejected the club’s proposal on such reductions.
AS report the following on the Camp Nou wage cut dispute:
The proposal under Spains temporary redundancy scheme (known as an ERTE in Spanish “expedientes de regulación temporal de empleo”) would see all of the clubs professional teams lose 70 percent of their salaries while they are not playing during the State of Emergency.
In an effort to try to reach a compromise, it’s believed Barcelona President Josep Bartomeu is willing to agree that the maximum wage cut would be 50%.
Yet, in the absence of any agreement, Barcelona are looking to unilaterally cut the wages of their star players. AS revealed:
While the Barcelona captains have rejected the proposal, the club has decided to exercise its legal right under the State of Emergency to apply the temporary redundancy even without the players approval something which the board considers necessary to mitigate the financial impact of the coronavirus crisis.
At the same time as Barcelona are looking to cut costs, Mundo Deportivo believe that the Catalans are also planning for future acquisitions.
According to MD on Thursday, Tottenham’s Tanguy Ndombele is a target for Barca.
But, considering that La Liga is suspended until further notice, and the obvious financial issues at the Camp Nou, can anyone really believe that Ndombele will leave Spurs for Spain anytime soon?
