Official: Arsenal confirm faith in Smith Rowe with new deal & iconic jersey number as Ozil-themed nickname emerges
Premier League outfit Arsenal have, on Thursday, confirmed that midfielder Emile Smith Rowe has put pen to paper on a new contract with the club.
Youngster Smith Rowe of course enjoyed a breakout campaign in the English capital in 2020/21, after finally being handed the chance to impress on a consistent basis late last year.
The Englishman was widely tipped as the long-term answer to Arsenal’s creative woes, with Smith Rowe’s hugely impressive attitude having already seen him take on cult hero status amongst the club’s fanbase, too.
In turn, it came as something of a surprise earlier this summer when one of the Gunners’ Premier League rivals began a concerted push to lure ESR away from North London.
The side in question, Aston Villa, were even reported to have seen a £25 million offer knocked back by those in a position of power at the Emirates.
As outlined above, though, on Thursday, Arsenal have moved to definitively put to bed any remaining speculation surrounding the future of the club’s up and coming midfield star.
This comes in the form of a new long-term contract, reaffirming the faith of both the club and Mikel Arteta in Smith Rowe’s talents.
In a post across their social media platforms this afternoon, the Gunners confirmed that the 20-year-old has put pen to paper on fresh terms, tying him down for the foreseeable future.
Speaking on the back of the news being made official, Mikel Arteta had the following to say:
‘I know the fans will join us in being delighted that Emile has committed his future to the club. We’re now looking forward to helping him develop further and seeing him become even more important to the strong young team we’re building.’

Perhaps even more noteworthy than Smith Rowe’s new deal itself, though, was the ensuing confirmation that the youngster has been handed a new jersey number at the Emirates.
And to say that ESR has been honoured would be putting it lightly. Previously donned by the likes of Dennis Bergkamp and Mesut Ozil, the youngster has been entrusted with the responsibility of Arsenal’s iconic no.10.
The decision has even resulted in Smith Rowe earning for himself something of a tongue-in-cheek new nickname, in the form of ‘Smith Rowzil’.
