Billy Joe Saunders taunts Canelo Alvarez over failed drugs test at heated face-off
Billy Joe Saunders upped the mind games ahead of his eagerly-anticipated super middleweight showdown against Canelo Alvarez by citing the Mexican’s controversial failed drugs tests during a tense face-off.
The build-up to the unification fight had previously been dominated by controversy surrounding the size of ring that will be in use at the AT&T Stadium in Texas.
Saunders’ father, Tommy, claimed earlier this week that the fight was off with the Brit wanting a much larger ring in order to maximise his speed and give him a better shot of evading one of the most ferocious punchers in the business.
While that issue has now been resolved, Saunders attempted to rile his opponent at yesterday afternoon’s head-to-head meeting by citing the current pound-for-pound king’s chequered history.
Canelo tested positive for clenbuterol in 2017 and 2018, offences which resulted in him being handed a one-year band which was backdated.
The 30-year-old, beaten only once in his professional career, has always maintained the positive sample was a consequence of him eating contaminated meat, but Saunders relished the opportunity remind him of the controversy at their first media event ahead of Saturday’s showdown.
As the pair squared up, Saunders could be heard saying: ‘Beef. You like that beef, yeah? You love the beef? Yeah, you like the beef, yeah?
Canelo did his best not to bite back and sarcastically laughed along, even when Tommy Saunders joined in with a barb of his own, adding: ‘The juicy bit.’
Speaking to the media afterwards, an ultra-focused Canelo insisted he would not be distracted from his goals by his opponents jibes and gamesmanship.
He said: ‘The goal is to be undisputed at 168lbs and then well see. I think I have about seven years left until I retire, but Im listening to my body and when it tells me to quit, Ill quit
‘Nothing frustrates me, I am just focused on winning on Saturday. He has to fight me on Saturday, that has to happen, its not a problem.
‘I dont care about anything; I am just going to go in there and do my job. Saunders has come up with other excuses, hes had plenty of excuses, but I am just going to go in there and do what I have to do.’
