Mourinho denies timing suits Tottenham vs Liverpool; has Tuchel message
Jose Mourinho does not feel Tottenham’s clash with Liverpool will be any easier – or harder – due to their opponents’ poor form.
Liverpool are without a win in their last five Premier League matches. It is the first time they have been on such a run since 2017.
Tottenham are one of the sides fighting at the same end of the table with them this season, and they will go head-to-head on Thursday night. Spurs would overtake Liverpool with a win.
Mourinho, though, does not think the fact that Liverpool are in bad form will make a difference to the match. Indeed, he still thinks the reigning champions are one of the teams to beat this season.
Asked about Liverpool’s title defence, Mourinho told a press conference: “When you win once, you know you have the team to win it twice.
“When you never win it, you have always the question mark: ‘What do we need to win it and we are not good enough to win it, what do we need to improve to win it?’
“When you win it, you know you are the best team and Liverpool was not just about winning, it was about winning so comfortably. So they know the team they are and they know the players they have. And they know they can do it again.”
The last meeting between the two sides in December ended 2-1 in Liverpool’s favour. The champions have stuttered since then and have failed to score in their last four league matches.
Relief came for Liverpool in front of goal against Manchester United in the FA Cup last time out, but they still lost 3-2.
Even so, Mourinho saw enough in that game to know his defence will still be in for a challenge on Thursday.
He said: “They scored two goals at Old Trafford where it is not easy to score and they could score more. They create a lot of chances.
“You are right they have top-class attacking players, I am right by saying they create chances in every match apart of scoring or not scoring.”
With Liverpool losing their cutting edge recently, it could be a good time for Tottenham – who have not tasted defeat since before Christmas – to face them.
However, Mourinho explained that every big club goes through tough spells, and just because it is Liverpool’s turn, does not mean it will be an easier match.
He said: “Every club, especially the traditional top six, has this situation. Not one team started with winning and is still winning after 19 matches and a few months of competition.
“Everyone has a difficult period. Some early, some later, some in the middle.
“Great evolution in the considered historically below level team and ambitions, great performances from many of them. Very good teams, very good squads. I feel completely natural that some results happen.
“No, I don’t feel that at all [that Spurs have an advantage due to Liverpool’s form]. Play Liverpool is play Liverpool, independent of all the context, independent of everything.
“I don’t feel it is an advantage and I don’t feel it is a disadvantage. Simple.”
Mourinho was showing little sympathy once again to Liverpool’s injury crisis. After denying the severity of the situation before their last meeting, the Spurs boss this time pointed to his own issues last season as justification for playing down the idea that Liverpool are short of defenders.
He said: “Well, we played half of last season without any attacking players. We had a period where we played Lucas every minute of every match, striker, winger, winger, striker. We lost Kane, we lost Son, we lost Bergwijn, we lost Lamela, we lost everybody.”
The Tottenham manager also spoke about some of their other rivals for the higher berths in the table this season.
For example, his former club Chelsea have just appointed Thomas Tuchel to replace Frank Lampard as manager. Mourinho explained that there is no comparison between Tuchel’s former job with PSG, though.
He said: “You cant compare the job at Paris Saint Germain with the job in the Premier League. It is not possible to compare.”
Another London team who are aiming high this season is West Ham. They have risen into the top four after their latest win, but Spurs can overtake them thanks to their games in hand.
Mourinho, though, said they are a threat to those aiming for the European places.
He explained: “They are winning matches. They have their style of play and they are winning matches, that is as simple as that.
“They clearly show their ambitions by trying to get a couple of players until the end of the month.”
