A deal to take Eric Garcia from Manchester City to Barcelona may not be a foregone conclusion, according to reports.
Garcia is in the final six months of his contract at City and can sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from this month.
While Pep Guardiola would like the young defender to stay in Manchester, it seems unlikely he will. Garcia appears to have his heart set on a return to boyhood club Barcelona.
The centre-back previously came through Barcelona’s academy before swapping Catalonia for Manchester. He has since become a first-team player for City.
The 20-year-old is by no means a regular at the Etihad Stadium yet. But he is someone Guardiola sees potential in and wants to keep around.
However, City may be powerless if Barcelona reach an agreement with Garcia and Guardiola recently admitted his hopes of keeping him were fading.
There have been suggestions that Garcia has already agreed personal terms with Barcelona. However, one club are trying to hijack the deal.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona now face competition from PSG for Garcia.
The French champions are on the lookout for defensive reinforcements. With Barcelona delaying a move for Garcia until after their presidential elections, PSG could take their chance to swoop in.
Barcelona could miss out on Garcia
Garcia’s preference remains Barcelona and with that in mind he is willing to wait. Although, the report claims Barca are concerned that he could accept any offer by the summer.
PSG could sneak in before then, as they would be willing to meet City’s demands for an up-front payment of 5m plus another installment of the same value in add-ons.
That would be a blow for Barca boss Ronald Koeman, who is desperate for defensive reinforcements and sees Garcia as the ideal profile – especially because he is a homegrown player.
If PSG firm up their interest, it may prompt a surprise move that would spell disappointment for both City and Barcelona.
