Jose Mourinho needs to use ‘fragile’ Gareth Bale more to end mental block, says Glenn Hoddle

Glenn Hoddle believes Gareth Bale looks ‘fragile’ and ‘tentative’ at Tottenham and the only way for Jose Mourinho to get the best out of him is to bite the bullet and pick him more regularly.

Bale’s return to Spurs on loan from Real Madrid came with much fanfare as fans in the white half of north London were understandably excited.

However, it is yet to produce much fruit, with the Welshman making just four Premier League appearances, three of which came from the bench.

He has turned out more regularly in the Europa League, making six appearances, but it has not turned out to be the blockbuster return that many had expected, or at least hoped for.

Hoddle accepts that there is nothing Bale can do when not on the pitch, but has done little to warrant selection when on the field.

However, the only way to get better performances out of the 31-year-old is to give him a run in the team and hope for the best.

‘Im disappointed that he hasnt had enough opportunities, but to get the opportunities he has to earn it,’ Hoddle told talkSPORT.

Tottenham Hotspur v Brighton & Hove Albion - Premier League

‘He came on against Brighton and scored the header that got them the three points. He affected the game there but its been stop-start for him.

‘He just looks a bit tentative to me and looks like hes not prepared to put a good sprint in like we know he can do.

‘Hes not going to be like yesteryear but hes got to put his foot in a bit more when he goes to beat people. He just looks a bit fragile.

‘It may be a mental thing but [hopefully] he can break through and contribute for Tottenham in a big way this season.

‘Hes just got to get on the pitch to do it and at the moment it seems Joses reluctant to give him any minutes.’

Bale’s late winner against Brighton in November was the highlight of his second spell at Spurs so far, while he has also managed one Europa League goal against LASK and another in the League Cup against Stoke.

He was on the bench for Spurs’ last two Premier League games, the draw with Fulham and win over Sheffield United, but remained on the bench for the full 90 minutes.
