Man Utd enter surprise talks with rarely used defender over new contract
Manchester United have reportedly offered a new contract to rarely seen defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
Fosu-Mensah has been at United since joining their academy in 2014. He made his senior debut two years later, but has barely played since then.
The defender has spent time on loan at Crystal Palace and Fulham, but has been back at Old Trafford since 2019 after the latter spell ended with a serious injury.
Since returning, Fosu-Mensah has played just eight times – only making four starts. His most recent appearance came as a substitute in the first Champions League game against Istanbul Basaksehir.
Despite his lack of action, though, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer retains faith in the 22-year-old. Therefore, the Manchester Evening News claim that United have offered him a new contract.
Fosu-Mensah’s current deal is due to expire at the end of this season, and he could begin negotiations with foreign clubs ahead of a free transfer from January.
However, United could give him one last chance to prove himself in the Premier League.
They showed their faith in Fosu-Mensah in April by using their option to extend his contract by one year. Now, they are reportedly willing to discuss another new deal for the Dutchman.
Fosu-Mensah was linked with a permanent move away from United in the most recent transfer window, but eventually stayed. It is not yet clear what his own future plans are.
Solskjaer, though, has been impressed with his attitude in training since the start of the year. And with Diogo Dalot currently out on loan at Milan, United could keep the right-back around.
Reports earlier in the week suggested that another United player could also be in line for a new contract.
It was suggested that the club could retain the services of veteran Juan Mata, who has been at Old Trafford since 2014.
The midfielder also has a contract running until 2021, but even though he has not played as much in recent years, he could receive fresh terms.
