No Jota for Liverpool as Klopp rings changes for Atalanta double bid
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is gambling on an inexperienced defence as the Reds take on Atalanta at Anfield in the Champions League this evening.
While Alisson remains in goal, the Reds boss has made three changes at the back from the team which won 3-0 over Leicester on Sunday.
Joel Matip keeps his spot. But there are starts for teenagers Rhys Williams and Neco Williams. And also a place at left-back for new Greek signing Kostas Tsimikas.
In midfield, Curtis Jones keeps his place alongside the more experienced heads of James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum.
Up front, Mo Salah returns to the side having sat out the Leicester game due to a positive COVID-19 test. He’s part of a three-man attack alongside Sadio Mane and Divock Origi.
That means no place for in-form Diogo Jota. The Portuguese attacker was the star of the show in the first meeting when Liverpool smashed Atalanta 5-0 in Italy, scoring a hat-trick.
Victory tonight will send Liverpool into the knockout stages after just four of their six group games.
They’ve won the previous three and kept a clean sheet in each.
If Klopp’s starting XI gamble doesn’t come off, he has plenty of reinforcements.
First-team regulars Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Jota and Andy Robertson are all among the substitutes.
Also on the bench for Liverpool are Adrian, Takumi Minamino and youngsters Jake Cain, Leighton Clarkson, Billy Koumetio and Caoimhin Kelleher.
Liverpool: Alisson; N Williams, R Williams, Matip, Tsimikas; Milner, Wijnaldum, Jones; Salah, Origi, Mane.
Subs: Adrian, Fabinho, Firmino, Minamino, Jota, Robertson, Cain, Clarkson, Koumetio, Kelleher.
