Inter Milan are furious that new signing Achraf Hakimi was unable to play against Borussia Monchengladbach. The Italian club were informed by UEFA that the Moroccan international had tested positive for coronavirus.
However, the club claim the former Real Madrid wing-back was asymptomatic and, further to that, tested negative a day after the game.
Inter Milan announces that Achraf Hakimi tested negative for the test carried out yesterday after the positive results found by the UEFA checks before the match against Borussia Monchengladbach,” the statement read.
The player, completely asymptomatic, was subjected to an additional test today to assess his actual situation.
Hakimi will now have blood tests to see the viral-load level in his blood. However, the club are supposedly so angry with UEFA for the situation that they could even pursue legal action.
Hakimi joined Inter Milan from Real Madrid for a 40 million fee having spent two seasons on loan with Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid’s sale of Hakimi was looked upon with some surprise. The Moroccan international had two storming loan spells in Germany with Dortmund and looked to come back and usurp Dani Carvajal’s right-back spot.
However, it was decided early on that Hakimi would not make his long-awaited return to the Bernabeu and instead be moving to the San Siro. Questions were rightly asked as to why Los Blancos would allow such a highly-rated and young talent leave.
There are three legitimate reasons as to why this was the case. Firstly, Carvajal is a very capable right-back in the prime of his career. At the age of 28, the Spanish international has won major trophies throughout his time at the club. Originally being sold to Bayer Leverkusen in his youth before Real activated a buy-back clause in the contract.

Furthermore, the back-up option for Real is Alvaro Odriozola. Now 24 years-of-age, it would be naïve to call him a ‘youngster’ but he thought of in high regard. Spending last season on loan with Bayern Munich, he has lacked consistent game time and will likely continue to do so with Carvajal on the scene.
Lastly, Hakimi is a very offensive minded right full/wing-back. Suited more the a 3 at the back formation where he is situated in the right wing-back role. Real Madrid, who play with a back four, likely identified that Hakimi’s defensive qualities might not suit that of their system.
The money which Inter were willing to pay was too good to turn down and hence the Moroccan, rightly, moved to northern Italy.
