Edouard Mendy discusses his relationship with Kepa & expectations that surround Chelsea goalkeepers
Chelsea were one of the most active Premier League sides on the transfer front this summer.
Their final addition in the latest window saw them lure Edouard Mendy away from Ligue 1 outfit, Rennes, for a fee of around £22m.
The African played a key role in Rennes boasting one of the best defensive records in the French top-flight last term and he has already shown signs he will have a similar impact for the Londoners.
So far, the stop-stopper has been afforded just three starts for Chelsea, but in said ties, he has helped a usually shaky Blues backline concede just one goal.
Now, ahead of Chelseas upcoming clash with Manchester United on Saturday, which you would expect Mendy to start, the 28-year-old has been speaking to the media.
First up, Mendy opened up on his relationship with Kepa.
The Spaniard has endured a woeful year or so at Stamford Bridge, and is was quite apparent that Mendy was signed to take over the no.1 spot from Kepa.
Despite this, Mendy insists he has a very good relationship with the former Athletic Bilbao man:
I have a very good relationship with Kepa.
The group of goalkeepers we have, we are all very open, and all of us understand that the team is the most important thing here and doing what is right for the group. Our relationships are already very good.
“We work well together and are pushing each other every day to improve ourselves and to improve each other, and we know as goalkeepers that we have to stay unified and that is how things are going at the moment.
Mendy also commented on the expectations which come with being a Chelsea keeper, though the Senegalese standout was quick to assure he will not put any pressure on himself:
To be at a club where such great goalkeepers have played is fantastic and very important to me. I am aware of the expectations that surround the goalkeeper position at Chelsea, but I am not going to put any pressure on myself and compare myself to legends here.
I have only just arrived so my aim is to carry on progressing and when the coach asks me, to make sure I am there for the team and helping with their success.
