Journalist claims Liverpool have met defender’s asking price with huge bid
Liverpool have reportedly agreed to meet the asking price for Kalidou Koulibaly with a bid of between £63million and £67million for the Napoli defender.
The Reds are short on centre-backs after losing Virgil van Dijk, who is likely to be out for the rest of the season.
Indeed, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are the club’s only senior stars in the position. However the former has already shown his frailty with injury and will not play against Ajax on Wednesday.
Previous reports have touted that several stars are on Liverpool’s radar ahead of a January mission to find cover. Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez and Brighton’s Ben White are among them.
However, Koulibaly is also reportedly on the list and one Italian journalist has claimed to have “sensational” news about a move to Anfield for the Senegal international.
Fabio Santini said (via AreaNapoli): “Attention: I have sensational news on Kalidou Koulibaly. Manchester City and United are on the Senegalese defender as well as PSG.
“The club that is more serious for the Senegalese is Liverpool. Attention: the Reds offer to the Naples a figure between 70 and 75 million euros, the sum that De Laurentiis asks.”
Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis made clear during the recent transfer window that Koulibaly could leave. However his club failed to find a suitor, with City opting to sign Benfica’s Ruben Dias.
Koulibaly, though, could still look to seek a final career challenge as he moves towards his 30th birthday.
Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp offered a spiky reaction – prompted by Jamie Carragher – when pressed on the need to sign a new defender.
Carragher claimed that the Reds need to “go big” in January with a raid.
Asked about the comments in Tuesday’s press conference, Klopp took issue. He claimed it was “difficult” to begin the season with four world-class centre-halves and said Carragher had made a mistake.
Indeed those comments have sparked a further reaction from Carragher.
