Lyon have announced the signing of Lucas Paqueta from AC Milan for 20 million.
The Brazilian midfielder joins a club who looked desperate to sell players to balance the books having missed out on Champions Legaue football.
Club President Jean-Michel Aulas claimed the club wanted to show their ability to sign players despite the financial situation the club is in.
He said, “this dispels the idea that we cannot make significant signings, that we cant have a competitive squad.
“We wanted to show with this deal that we were not dependent on sales.”
Aulas confirmed he expects Paqueta to feature very soon.
“Paquetá has signed a five-year contract. He already knows a few players in the squad,” the Frenchman remarked. “We are convinced that he will integrate quickly. He arrives for 20 million. It’s a good bit of business.”

During the press conference reveal of Paqueta, Aulas also spoke about the possible departures within the squad.
The signing of Paqueta appears to be as a possible replacement for the aforementioned Aouar. Arsenal are understood to be long-term suitors of the Frenchman but Aulas spoke of two other clubs vying for the 22-year-old’s signiture.
“We know that three big clubs are interested in him. 2 in the short-term, 1 in the long-term.” The club in the “long-term”, you would assume, is Arsenal with one of the “short-term” potentially Juventus.
The President continued, “not much has happened. All the clubs cant give us financially what Lyon wants.”
Interestingly, Aulas has been very vocal throughout the latter stages of the negotiations for Aouar. Whether or not there is an element of ‘mind games’ to speed the process along or to panic suitors into increasing bids is yet unclear.
