Torreira the latest Arsenal star tipped as potential makeweight in Thomas Partey deal
Speculation in the Spanish media this weekend has hinted that Lucas Torreira is of interest to Atletico Madrid, potentially opening the door for a player-plus-cash Arsenal swoop for Thomas Partey.
Speculation surrounding the future of Ghanaian international Partey has been rampant of late.
Amid another superb campaign to date, during which the 27-year-old has again proven himself to be one of the finest midfielders in La Liga, Partey has inevitably been linked with a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano.
What makes Partey’s situation such an intriguing one for interested clubs, though, is the presence of a rumoured 50 million release clause in the all-action Atleti star’s contract.
With the funds available to clubs across Europe expected to be down this summer on the back of the COVID-19 crisis, and top-quality midfielders in scarce supply, sides in need of reinforcement in the middle of the park could do a lot worse than Partey, especially at the aforementioned price.
As outlined above, meanwhile, the club thought to have been leading the race for Partey’s signature, for some time now, have been Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta is known to be a fan of the Ghanaian’s talents, with Partey exactly the type of upgrade the Gunners’ midfield has so long been crying out for.
As such, it no doubt came as a major blow to the Arsenal faithful when widespread reports late last month assured that any potential deal was dead in the water.
Arsenal are said to be unwilling to pay the 50 million required to coax the African to north London, with Atletico refusing to budge on their asking price.

As outlined above, however, if the latest word stemming from Spain today is to be believed, then a potential avenue to Partey’s Emirates switch being resurrected may have been found.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Atletico Madrid are expressing an interest in the signature of Lucas Torreira.
This comes with the Uruguayan midfielder, who just this week hinted that he would not be opposed to departing the English capital, reported to be ‘to the liking’ of Diego Simeone.
As such, Atletico ‘would consider’ a swoop for the out-of-favour Arsenal man, opening the door to a potential player-plus-cash exchange deal for Partey.
It should be noted that Torreira is not the first Gunners midfielder to have been touted as a possible makeweight in a swoop for Partey, with Matteo Guendouzi having also been tipped for a move to the Spanish capital of late.
