Tube station accidents soar as passengers too scared to hold escalator handrails

More and more people are hurting themselves in London Underground stations because they’re afraid they could catch Covid by touching escalator handrails.

Transport bosses say people are holding the handrails ‘due to a perception they are not clean’ and are falling over as a result.

Drunken revellers celebrating the end of lockdown are also said to be behind the spike in accidents.

Transport for London (TfL) says there were 12 serious injuries on the Tube network between April and June and 23 on buses – more than any other quarter of the past two years.

The body’s managing director Andy Lord told a safety panel incidents were higher on Tuesdays, Fridays and weekends.

Transport for London says it is spending a ‘huge amount’ of money cleaning handrails (Picture: PA)

He added: The two biggest risks we have are falls on escalators caused by people who dont hold the handrail.

‘There is an issue with the perception that the handrail is not clean because of the pandemic. The other bigger issue is actually intoxication.

Mr Lord said escalator falls are now TfL’s ‘biggest risk from a personal injury perspective’.

He said elderly passengers are most at risk if they fall on the escalator, which often happens when they are trying to manoeuvre luggage onto it.

The transport boss said TfL is spending a huge amount of money cleaning escalator handrails and installing UV cleaners at stations.
