Tokyo Olympics open in near-empty stadium
The Olympic Games have finally opened in Tokyo after being delayed for a year by the pandemic and in keeping with these times, the opening ceremony was held in a near-empty stadium.
Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka lit the Olympic cauldron after a spectacular show performed to a handful of actual spectators, including a few world leaders and journalists covering the Games.
And there was a minute’s silence to remember the lives lost, especially those who died during the pandemic.
