Covid deaths rise by 50% in a week as UK records nearly 40,000 more cases
Covid deaths have increased by 50% in a week but there are signs the UK’s third wave is beginning to level off.
A further 39,906 new cases have been recorded today, less than the 48,553 seen this time last week.
The overall trend is still up by 25% week-on-week but it appears the surge in cases may have peaked.
The latest Government figures show another 45,101 people have had their first dose of the vaccine while 183,338 have had their second in the latest 24 hour period.
Another 788 people were admitted to hospital with Covid on July 18, meaning patients have increased by 5,175 in the last week.
