A teenager has appeared in court charged with the murder of a young man in a London shopping centre.

Bhoniefas Rexson, 18, is accused of stabbing Gedeon Ngwendema to death outside a JD Sports store in Brent Cross shopping centre, north London, last Tuesday.

Mr Ngwendema, 21, was fatally knifed in the chest just after 6.40pm.

Two off-duty doctors who happened to be in the area rushed to his aid.

Witnesses said a defibrillator was used as Mr Ngwendema lay outside Marks and Spencer, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Frightened shoppers fled as the centre was evacuated by officers. Several police vehicles, ambulances and an air ambulance helicopter were sent in response.

The following day, the victim’s mother Thethe Elonga broke down in tears as she visited the scene to lay flowers.

She told the Evening Standard. Im heartbroken. He was a wonderful boy, respectful and lovely.

Mr Ngwendema was described as a great boy who was loved by everyone

He did very well at school and had a very bright future ahead of him. I dont know how this could have happened. He was a great boy and loved by everyone.

Mr Ngwendema had been at home with his mother when a friend called and asked him to go out, his uncle Fred said.

He was a very good boy, quiet and polite. He wanted to do businesses studies and then set up his own business one day selling clothing or food, he said.

Its very shocking and I feel completely down, its unbelievable.

He said Mr Ngwendema had been shopping already that day and was persuaded to go out again with his friends after initially resisting.

His uncle said: Hed just been shopping with his mum to buy some water when his friends called and said, Oh bruv, can you come?

He said, man, Im tired, I dont want to go out, I just want to stay here with my mum.

Rexson, of Kingsbury, north west London, was charged with murder and possession of a blade in public.

This morning he appeared at the Old Bailey by video link from Wormwood Scrubs.

Judge Angela Rafferty QC set a plea hearing for August 2 and remanded the defendant into custody.
