Red list passengers avoid ?1,750 quarantine with loophole
Passengers can swerve the hefty hotel fees by stopping off in Turkey on their way back to the UK (Picture: MailOnline/Reuters)

Travellers returning to the UK from red list countries are swerving hefty hotel quarantine fees by stopping over in Turkey on the way home for a fraction of the price.

Passengers flying back directly from countries like Pakistan, India and Bangladesh would ordinarily be required to stump up £1,750 to isolate in a hotel for 10 days.

But the rules only apply to people who have been in a red list country for the past 10 days prior to arrival.

It means savvy tourists can book a stay somewhere in Turkey, which is not on the banned list, for the same period for as little as £450. They can then fly back to the UK and isolate at home in line with the governments rules.

Mohammad Saad, a businessman from Bradford, told the BBC he flew to Pakistan for a family funeral on March 23 and was due to return on April 10, the day the country was added to the red list.

Unable to change his flights, he and his son flew to Turkey instead, spending 10 days in Istanbul for just over a quarter of the price of quarantining in the UK.

He said: Its like an extra holiday. Then you can fly back into the UK from Istanbul without any hotel quarantine.

Zulfiqar Ali, 45, flew into Istanbul from Pakistan on April 24.

The taxi driver said: I paid £100 for 11 nights. It’s a double bed, a TV and a fridge. It was online and food was very cheap.

One travel agent in Bradford has been arranging stays in Turkey to try and ease the financial burden on his clients.

Ascher Khawaja of Oltrax Travel said: I’ve got customers who can’t afford to come back.

With the hotel factored in, it works out at around £600 compared to £1,700-plus.

Department for Transport guidance states: If you have been in or through any of the countries listed below in the previous 10 days, you will be refused entry to the UK.

If you are a British or Irish National, or you have residence rights in the UK, you will be able to enter. You must quarantine in a government approved hotel for 10 days.

If you do not travel in or through a country on the list in the 10 days before you arrive in England, youll need to quarantine in the place youre staying.
