Four more die of Covid as 1,946 new cases recorded

A further four people have died in the UK within 28 days of a positive Covid test.

There were also 1,946 new cases of the virus recorded in the previous 24 hours, Government data revealed. There were 160 people admitted to hospital with the virus, and there are now 1,451 patients receiving care, 185 of whom require ventilation.

More than 34.6 million people have now had their first dose of a Covid jab, and 15.6 million are fully vaccinated against the virus. It comes as the Government recently celebrated delivering 50 million doses of vaccines in the country overall.

The data means that 29.7% of the UK’s adult population have now been fully vaccinated against Covid, the Office for National Statistics said.

Broken down by country, this is equivalent to 29.5% of England’s adult population, 30.6% in Wales, 30.4% in Scotland and 30.1% in Northern Ireland.

The Government is currently monitoring England’s Covid data before international travel is set to resume from no sooner than May 17.

Holidaymakers visiting most popular foreign destinations may be required to show evidence they’ve been vaccinated, received a recent negative test or have coronavirus antibodies before they fly.

Today Downing Street admitted the NHS app may not be ready for use as a vaccine passport by that date.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps previously said the NHS app – which is currently used to book medical appointments and order repeat prescriptions – will be able to display evidence that someone in England has been vaccinated or tested.

But the Prime Minister’s official spokesman indicated that officials are working on alternative plans for when international travel resumes. He said: ‘Mr Shapps set out the approach we are looking to take

‘Obviously we will be able to confirm ahead of the 17th at the earliest what measures are used for those initial countries that are available for travel, be it the app or another approach.’

The spokesman added: ‘There are other routes to achieving the same end-goal. We are working on the app at the moment, at pace, to have it ready, and we will be able to confirm ahead of the 17th at the earliest what approaches we will be using.’
