George Floyd’s killer Derek Chauvin placed on suicide watch in high-security jail

Murderer Derek Chauvin has been placed on suicide watch after being found guilty of killing black man George Floyd. The former Minneapolis cop spent his first night in a high-security prison last night after being convicted for Floyd’s death in May last year.

Chauvin, 45, is being held at Minnesota’s only maximum security prison, MCF-Oak Park Heights, ahead of being sentenced for murdering Floyd, 46.

Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in court yesterday following the events of last May, when he was filmed kneeling on the neck and back of Floyd for more than nine minutes.

It took the jury just 10 hours to find Chauvin guilty on all three counts and he was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs and remanded in custody shortly after. He’s now being held up in a restricted housing unit separate from the general population at Oak Park Heights.

According to officials, Chauvin is being kept away from other prisoners in what’s described as ‘administrative segregation. Authorities have said such measures are used when ‘someones presence in the general population is a safety concern’.

Chauvin is being closely watched by prison guards to ensure his safety, not just as a suicide risk, but also from other inmates with violent criminal histories, many of whom have a strong dislike towards law enforcement.

The former cop faces a minimum sentence of 12.5 years and maximum of 40 years if he serves terms for each charge concurrently. If served consecutively, Chauvin faces between 29 and 75 years behind bars for murdering Floyd.

Tuesday’s verdict triggered cheers outside the Hennepin County Court and massive celebrations across America, while Joe Biden vowed tackle ‘systemic racism’ in the wake of Chauvin’s conviction.

Within minutes Biden phoned Floyd’s family to tell them that his death, which had sparked a wave of global Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests, was going to ‘change the world.’

Supporters of the BLM movement and of George Floyd gathered in large crowds across America to celebrate Chauvin’s conviction. Many showed an outpouring of emotion while many more waved homemade banners and signs that said ‘justice’.

No prisoner has ever escaped from Oak Park Heights, which sits about 25 miles east of Minneapolis near the Wisconsin border and houses around 500 of the most high-risk inmates in the state.

Chauvin is expected to be sentenced in eight weeks time.
