When will schools reopen after lockdown?
UK schools and colleges remain closed as the country grapples to contain the current wave of coronavirus infections.
Boris Johnson announced earlier this month that schools would move to online learning for all pupils except children of key workers and the most vulnerable with immediate effect.
With many parents once again having to juggle homeworking with homeschooling, many are wondering how long this latest shutdown will last.
Just when will schools be reopening in England?
The Government has yet to outline a definitive timeline for when educational institutions will begin to reopen, but on Tuesday Education Minister Nick Gibb said that schools will find out ‘within days’.
Education leaders said that opening schools before Easter was ‘optimistic’, but Mr Johnson has previously said he hopes to reopen schools in mid-February after the half-term break.
It’s been suggested that primary schools might be among the first to reopen.
Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are also awaiting news on when their schools will be allowed to reopen – and will likely get more details after the next lockdown review.
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has said that schools will be given a clear two-week notice period before reopening.
‘What we will be wanting to do is to give schools as much notice as possible so teachers can get ready, children can prepare, and parents know in order to manage their lives, Mr Williamson told Sky News last week.
He added: One of the key criteria is whether the pressure on the NHS has started to lift, that is why we had to take the national decision, very much in the national interest, one that I personally never would have wanted to take to see schools closed again.
We had to make that decision because of the pressure on the NHS and needing to reduce movement in society and in communities.
However, he said that schools were the last to close and will be very much the first to open once lockdown measures start to ease.
Schools will break up for half term on Friday 12 February and pupils will return on Monday 22 February 2021, which is followed by the Spring holiday starting on Thursday 1 April 2021.
Children normally have two weeks off over the Easter period, with the Spring holiday ending on Friday 16 April 2021.
After returning on Monday 19 April, the final half term of the academic year is set to start on Monday 31 May and last for one week. Students will then be back in class until the end of the school year, which will be around Monday 26 July 2021.
The school holidays for 2021 are as follows:
It is advisable to double check with your local council or with your local school to confirm the exact dates of the school holidays in 2021, as term dates can vary depending on the region and educational institution.
