Boy, 10, will have both legs amputated after catching Covid

Boy, 10, will have both legs amputated after catching Covid

A 10-year-old boy will have both of his legs amputated after he was diagnosed with a rare condition as a result of having coronavirus.

Dae’Shun Jamison, from Shelby, Michigan, has already had his right leg amputated and will lose his left leg as well due to a disease that attacked his vital organs and reduced the supply of oxygen to his extremities.

The schoolboy tested positive for Covid in December and only suffered with ‘mild symptoms’ at first, according to his mother Brittney Autman.

She said her son gradually started experiencing headaches and after a trip to the ER, Dae’Shun was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with a condition called MIS-C, reports MLive.com.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare, overactive immune response that leads to inflammation of various body parts, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs.

The CDC, as well as other healthcare experts, say that although it’s unknown what causes MIS-C, many children who are diagnosed with it have previously been diagnosed with Covid.

Dae-Shun was put on a ward on January 21 but had to be put on a ventilator on Christmas Eve as his heart was being overworked. He was also put on dialysis and hooked up to an ECMO machine, which added oxygen to his blood and pumped it around his body.

However, he lost circulation in his hands and feet and his legs swelled up with fluid as his vital organs struggled to function as normal.

The damage caused was so severe that he had to have his right leg amputated, his doctors said.

Writing on a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for Dae’Shun’s treatment, Brittney announced that her son will also need to have his left leg removed too.

Brittney, was also has a daughter, aged seven, has so far raised more than $44,000 for Dae’Shun and has been keeping donors informed via updates.

On December 30 she wrote that he will need to have his fingertips and toes amputated and a few days later, on January 3, she wrote that his lungs were strong enough for him to be finally be taken off the ventilator.

She wrote that she and the doctors explained to Dae-Shun about him losing his legs and said he ‘understood everything’ and that ‘when he wake up his leg will not look the same.’

‘DaeShun completely broke down in tears which effected me in so many ways, I cant believe this is really happening to my baby,’ Brittney wrote.

After the amputation, she said the surgery went well, but that ‘In a few weeks’ his left leg would need to be amputated as well.

Brittney added that she hopes Dae’Shun will one day be able to walk again with prosthetic limbs.
