Londoners face second lockdown if they don’t keep distance, Matt Hancock warns

There could be another lockdown in London if coronavirus cases begin to rise, Matt Hancock has warned.

The health secretary said he would not hesitate to implement restrictions in the capital after they were imposed in parts of northern England on Thursday night.

Restrictions affecting 4.5 million people were announced for the North West due to a surge of infections.

Hancock told Sky News on Friday: Weve demonstrated that were prepared to take the actions necessary to keep people safe.

And that was true in Leicester when we took action there.

And were taking much more localised action in hundreds of different locations across the country.

‘In the South West and the South East, thankfully, the number of cases is much lower, so we havent had to take this sort of action but we dont shy away from taking it.’

Plans to open casinos, bowling alleys and skating rinks tomorrow have been shelved in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Boris Johnson has said further easing of lockdown restrictions including allowing small wedding receptions will be postponed for at least another two weeks.

At a Downing Street press conference the Prime Minister said squeezing the brakes on reopening could help prevent a repeat of the nationwide lockdown.

Johnson said the contagion is rising across the UK, with one in 1,500 people having the virus compared to one in 1,800 on July 15 and one in 2,000 on July 2.

The Office for National Statistics estimate there are now 4,900 new infections every day up from around 3,000 a day on July 14 and 2,000 a day at the end of June.
