Spanish city becomes first in country go back into draconian-style lockdown

Spanish city becomes first in country go back into draconian-style lockdown

A city in Catalonia has become the first in Spain to be ordered back into a draconian-style lockdown since the state of emergency ended in the country.

A total of 140,000 residents in the city of Lleida and seven municipalities in the Segria region, have been ordered to stay indoors following a spike in Covid-19 cases. Residents are now only allowed to go out to buy food and essentials or go to the bank.

Those whose jobs are deemed ‘essential’ are allowed back to the workplace, while the rest of the public have been told they must work from home. Officials in Lleida, which is 100 miles from Barcelona, and the surrounding areas have also banned meetings of more than 10 people.

Weddings will also be cancelled and restaurants are only permitted to do home deliveries. Over the past 24 hours, Catalonia has registered 816 new cases. The Segria region is said to have accounted for 190 of the total.

The lockdown comes just days after English travellers were given the green light to travel to Spain without having to quarantine for 14 days upon return.

Several of Spain’s most popular holiday destinations, such as Malaga’s Costa del Sol, Mallorca, Ibiza and Catalonia – including Barcelona – have now made the wearing of face masks obligatory at nearly all times in public.

The newly-imposed measures are a near return to the first weeks of Spain’s strict lockdown – one of Europes toughest – when children were cooped up in their homes for nearly two months.

It comes after authorities locally locked down the region last weekend, banning people from leaving or entering the area, except for medical emergencies, following a spike in cases.

Two days ago, the Catalan government ruled out a total lockdown and said it believed the mandatory use of face masks could help combat the spread of the virus.

An official said at the time that they were ‘not envisaging a total locked down’ and that ‘people cannot be locked away indoors,’ but following another increase in cases authorities were forced to make a U-turn on restrictions.

Part of the La Marina region north of Lugo in Galicia also remains on lockdown, although people are being allowed out of their homes. They are only being stopped from entering or leaving the area, with some exceptions such as medical emergencies.

British tourists were allowed to enter Spain for the first time in three months on June 21 when the countrys state of emergency ended.

On Friday, holidaymakers were told they could freely travel to Spain, which has created an ‘air bridge’ with England. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office also updated its travel guidance, having previously warned against all but essential travel.
